Product Name Product Definition Product Units Spatial Resolution Temporal Resolution Coverage Area Product Format Period of Product Availability
Snow Cover Snow cover on land and inland water % snow cover 500m square 1 day/8 days 1200 km squares around the globe HDF-EOS 2000-present
Gridded Snow Cover Snow cover on land and inland water % snow cover 0.05° square Daily/8-days Global HDF-EOS 2000-present
Land Cover/Land Change "Various types of land cover (density of plants, urban, etc.)" Enumeration: Water, Evergreen/deciduous, broadleaf/needle, mixed forrest, closed & open shrubs, woody savannas, savannas, grasslands, permanent wetlands, croplands, urban, cropland/natural vegetation mosaic, permanent snow/ice, barren, unclassified 1km grid Annual snapshot every 96 days Global HDF-EOS & ASCII July 2000-present
Vegetation Cover Conversion and Continuous Fields The global distribution of vegetation cover change. Where there is sufficient evidence, the type of change will be labeled (e.g., forest conversion to agricultural fields or grassland or bare surface). 0=no change 1=deforestation with 90% certainty 2=deforestation with 80% certainty 250m or 500m grid 16 or 32 days Global HDF-EOS 2000-present
Vegetation Indices Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) or “greenness index” provides a measure of the vegetation’s health and the stress that is affecting the vegetation. It is calculated as a ratio using atmospherically corrected reflectances from the visible and near infrared. The other index is the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) which reduces the interference of smoke and saturation (highest possible reading in areas of high vegetation), and bare soil. Dimensionless, calculated as a ratio 250m, 500m, 1km, 25km grids 16 days/1 month Global HDF-EOS 2000-present
Leaf Area Index (LAI) & (FPAR) LAI defines an important structural property of a plant canopy, the number of equivalent layers of leaves vegetation displays relative to a unit ground area. FPAR measures the proportion of available radiation in the specific photosynthetically active wavelengths of the spectrum 0.4 - 0.7 mm that a canopy absorbs. It is non-linearly related to the LAI. % 1 km grids 1 day/8 days Global HDF-EOS 2000-present
Vegetation Production An accurate regular measure of the growth of the terrestrial vegetation. Production is determined by first computing a daily net photosynthesis value which is then summed over a 8 day interval. gC/m2/day 1 km grid 8-day Global HDF-EOS 2000-present
Net Primary Productivity Accurate regular measure of the growth of the terrestrial vegetation. gC/m2 1 km grid Annual Global HDF-EOS 2001-present
Land surface temperature Land temperature within 0.2 degrees Celsius. Degrees C 1 km, 5 km, .05 degree Daily, 8-day, month Global HDF-EOS 2001-present
Sea surface temperature Sea surface temperature within 0.25 degree Celsius. Degrees C 1 km Daily, Weekly, Day and Night Global HDF-EOS 2001-present
Vegetation moisture stress Vegitation moisture stress (or fuel moisture stress index (FMSI)) indicates the flamability of particular plants in comparison to their 15-year average flamability. Positive numbers indicate increased flamability, and negative numbers indicate decreased flamability. Unitless 250 m 16-day Global HDF-EOS 2001-present
Evapotranspiration Surface resistance and evapotranspiration for estimating photosynthesis, respiration, and net primary production. Evapotranspiration fraction index (0-100) 1 km grid 8-day Global over land HDF-EOS 2001-present
Aerosol optical depth Visibility based on atmospheric extinction through a vertical column of air. Scale of 0-3 1 km grid 8-day/yearly Global HDF-EOS 2001-present
